At J & D Heirloom Seeds we like to share our history in hope that you will enjoy learning how our business was started. About six years ago We developed an interest with saving seeds. We quickly realized that collecting seeds from a hybrid variety is not possible, because it does not produce true to type offspring. When an elderly friend gave us some pumpkin seeds and she told us that these had been raised by her parents and been in her family for over fifty years, we began to get excited!! Thus began the vision of collecting seeds that have been successfully grown by previous generations of people and preserving them for sharing these agricultural heritage success stories as well as their delicious produce with the next generation of gardeners. we are very grateful for the many opportunities that have opened up for us since that time that enabled us to start our own business and we hope you enjoy it as much as we do.
A word from Dodi.(written at age 11)
Hi, I am Dodi. It all started in 2006 when my Dad bought a few varieties of heirloom seed and started collecting, and preserving them. At that time I would help my Dad planting plants, picking fruit from the garden, and saving seeds. We liked the idea of saving our own seeds and it was quite easy, so every year we would buy some more heirloom seeds. In 2010 my brother Joseph and I had the idea of starting a small heirloom seed business, because we had quite a large quantity of heirloom seeds. We liked the name of J& D Heirloom seeds (J for Joseph and D for Dodi). So in 2010 we opened the business with about 35 varieties. A week after we launched our business we were invited to a community meeting at our friends’ house to sell our seeds, … that day we had our first sales! The rest of the year sales were very successful and that made us really excited about the future of our business. Friends began to trade with us old varieties of seeds that had been in their families for many generations and we grew these successfully to add to our collection, (seeds like Aunt Maude tomato and Big Boy pumpkin). Now in 2020 we have over 85 varieties of seed for you to pick from and I hope you like our selection of seeds.
